Since our house fire, I process an old standby Bible verse differently.
"Greater is He that is in me, than he that is in the world" 1 John 4:4
I used to think of this verse as something to fend off evil. You know, like holding up a cross to a vampire. But then after our house fire, I thought of it more as a victory declaration. "Greater is He that is in me, than he that is in the world!"
I don't believe God started or caused our house fire. Investigators were never able to determine a cause. We had no logical ideas. We do know it was electrically related and the origin of the fire was where the power box fed into the house, outside my kitchen window. Perhaps the fire was brought about by evil and meant for harm. But God took that circumstance and totally turned it around to bring about blessing instead of hurt and pain. He certainly was there protecting us at every turn. It was pretty miraculous, and our whole family was also protected from traumatic side effects. We all did well through the experience. So rather than panic and lasting negative effects on us, there was strengthening of faith and trust, and improvements in our character. An experience like this definitely changes you and makes an impact.
I believe God has the power and creativity to turn around our circumstances in ways we could never imagine or predict. God has power to redeem.
