The Roof Is On Fire! written on 5/31/09 (the day after the fire)

Hello dear friends!
I am not sure how quickly news spreads, but I have some . . . .

Our home burned down early Sat AM. We all got out safely and the house was engolfed in flames within a 15 minute period of our exit.

God woke us up to strange noises in the kitchen that we thought were our cats causing trouble. When John was annoyed enough to check it out, he came back to tell me our house was on fire. WOW. The flames were showing outside our kitchen sink window. We got out of the house, before the the inside was smoky. We grabbed the dog and one of our two cats, car keys, purse, etc and made a quick exit. I had to wake the neighbor to make the 911 call and wait for the fire department to make it. They are 1/4 mile away but seemed like an eternity as the flames shot up the side of the house and then took off all the way across the roof line. It was amazing and unbelievable. We now have a total sky light effect, no roof, no ceilings, etc. The upper floor sort of dropped in on the lower in spots.

Several of the emergency people seemed to live within our same neighborhood. The Salvation Army representative lives just up the road. . The fire recovery service guy also lives with in our neighborhood. We have two immediate neighbors that are either in the insurance industry or connected to it that took the place of what our insurance agent wasn't there to do. By the time the fire dept. left we had 4 different fire recovery services in action on our behalf. Kindness of neighbors and people we can't even remember names of offering assistance, friends waiting for our arrival with open arms, family members that helped us and cared for our pets and children. It is all over whelming and we can not express our gratitude fully.

Despite what is an obvious dreadful day in our lives, we instead feel a incredible gratitude to our God in how we were cared for and watched over in so many of the details of the day and moving forward. Yes we cry at times, but not necessarily out of despair.

So many are wanting to help and assist and it is hard to know what to say. We are rookies in this experience and haven't figured all of that out! We do feel loved and that means a lot to us and maybe that is how you will lend your assistance to us. Praying for us and caring about us. We do have much work to do and not sure what it all is . . but God is leading us through this. Our phones will be a crazy hub of activity. We may not be able to keep up with all the contacts.

We send our love and gratitude and please join us in a celebration of thanks for our family and health and that we are not mourning loss of loved ones. Even our 2nd cat who remained in the home throughout the whole 5 hour process was recovered under our bed where we told the fireman to look. He shouted out " Will he bite me?" Those were the happiest words to our ears. He is unscathed and his beautiful chubby self. I will send out more messages through out the days. I have some wonderful stories to share but not enough time now.

In his care,

Tina . . .In behalf of our family and our wonderful pets

Luke 12:6-7 Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? Yet not one of them is forgotten by God. Indeed, the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Don't be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.
(Our story to follow another day)

  1. I'm so glad your family is safe and that all you lost was a house (relatively speaking, that's not much, right). I look forward to following your journey.
